If you'd told me a few years ago that in February 2025, at the age of 57, I'd be launching my own business, I wouldn't have believed you. Life, however, has a funny way of guiding us down unexpected paths, often through challenges and pivotal moments that shape our purpose.

My new venture, Bursary Management Solutions, is dedicated to providing crucial support and guidance to post-16 schools and colleges managing the 16-19 bursary. The aim is simple but powerful: help educational institutions maximise the support they can offer to students, implementing best practice in both administration and compliance.

My journey to this point began in inner-city Leeds, where my grandmother raised me. We didn't have much—free school meals were a necessity—but we had strength, resilience, and hope. Those early experiences instilled in me a deep appreciation for the value of financial support in education and the difference it can make in young lives.

Initially, my career took a very different direction, rooted in banking and finance—a world of numbers, targets, and financial management. While valuable, it lacked the sense of purpose I yearned for. It was when I transitioned into education, administering EMA financial support at a large sixth form in Wakefield, that I discovered my true calling. In 2015, I further embraced this path, becoming Head of Year at a large college in Leeds, situated in one of the UK's most deprived areas. There, working closely with students and their families, my eyes opened fully to the stark realities they faced daily.

My role in safeguarding exposed me to the harsh truths and difficult circumstances so many students encountered. I became determined to do everything possible to ensure these young people had equal opportunities. It became clear to me that the 16-19 bursary, if utilised effectively, could transform their futures.

Launching my own business has been a steep learning curve. I've embraced numerous new skills: building my own website from scratch, navigating SEO, and even writing this blog! Every challenge has taught me something new and valuable, reinforcing my belief in lifelong learning.

Yet, the greatest catalyst for this life-changing decision was deeply personal: becoming a grandmother to my wonderful grandson, Henry. Holding him for the first time, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. I wanted to create something lasting, meaningful, and impactful.

Living with Crohn’s disease hasn't made any of this easy. The condition brings with it fatigue, debilitating flare-ups, and constant uncertainty. But it has also taught me resilience and an unwavering determination to overcome obstacles. Every setback has reinforced my belief in persistence and courage.

Today, as I look back on this remarkable journey, I feel immense pride in my achievements and the valuable experience I've gained. My deep understanding of student needs and my passion for making a difference will undoubtedly benefit my clients. Bursary Management Solutions isn’t just my business—it's my purpose, my legacy, and my commitment to empowering the next generation.
